Connotation Chart
I designed this worksheet to review and extend students´ knowledge of vocabulary with similar denotations but different connotations.
Students complete a chart with twelve pairs of words with similar denotations but different connotations. Specifically, they write the word of the pair with a positive or neutral connotation in the left-hand column and the other word of the pair with the negative connotation in the right-hand column.
I used this activity with English Language and Literature undergraduates in a Korean university setting. To make it more fun, I suggest presenting it in the form of a team competition.
