Balloon Debate - How materialistic are you?
This activity is thought to practise debate skills; you can adapt it to any topic. In my case, the topic was: money + how materialistic are you? It´s great fun! The students are also given useful language on agreeing/disagreeing for the debate. Enjoy it!
Procedure:
Each student will be given a debate card with the object or person that they will be in the debate. Then the following description will be on each card too so that students know what to do:
A hot air balloon which is losing height rapidly will soon crash because it is overweight; therefore you have to get rid of some of the passengers or objects in it. Fortunately only one passenger/object which is crucial for the world will survive. In order to be the survivor and be on the earth again you will have to give your arguments and convince the others that you are essential and necessary for the world. By the end of the debate your group will have to vote for the winner.
