Freedom Riders
Here is a worksheet for the powerful, award-winning PBS documentary "Freedom Riders" about young people who set out to change the world and did! Despite attempts by the Kennedy administration and Rev. Martin Luther King to get them to give up their dangerous ride on public buses through the deep South in 1961, they persisted, risking their lives, getting firebombed, beaten, and imprisoned. When warned by Attorney-General Robert Kennedy’s assistant that they might get killed, they replied calmly that they had written out their last wills and testaments the night before.
Even if you don’t use this in class, I recommend you watch this film online for your personal benefit at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/freedomriders/watch. The Freedom Riders set off the U.S. Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s like no other event.
