Grammar game: Who is he/she? Defining Relative Clause
Divide the class into groups of 4.
1. Each group should be given 5 minutes to come up with 5 sentences about 5 classmates using the structure ´He/She is someone who...´ (No. of sentences to be made depends on class size and time available)
***Students are reminded to use a different verb after ´who´ in each of the sentences.
2. During the 15-minute activity (duration depends on class size), two students in each group station in their own groups while two others visit as many groups as they can within the time limit. For those stationing in their own groups, they should keep Score Sheet 2; while the students visiting other groups should take with them Score Sheet 1.
3. Students with Score Sheet 1 should visit other groups, guessing the answers to each question. For each question answered correctly, they get one mark.
4. Before they leave, they should also give a grade to the sentences made by the group they are visiting. For a sentence like, ´He is someone who wears glasses.´ when there are many students wearing glasses in class, the group should be given a lower grade, e.g., B-, as this group has not shown good understanding of how the defining relative clause can be used to show exactly which ´someone´ we are talking about.
