Spin the future
Timing
10 – 15 minutes
Procedure
1. Divide the class into pairs or small groups depending on your class size.
2. Distribute a spinner and a sharp pencil to each pair or group.
3. Read through the headings on the spinner together and come up with some examples with the class.
4. Ask one student to spin their spinner and call out the category on which it lands, e.g. shopping. This student should then give you an example of a type of shopping, e.g. clothes.
5. Now ask your students for a future sentence using going to and clothes, e.g. I’m going to buy some new clothes at the weekend, and write this model sentence on the board.
6. You may like to practise a few more examples with the whole class.
7. The class can now continue with the activity in their pairs or groups.
Variation
This activity could be expanded to incorporate the simple present, e.g. if the student spins languages, he/she should make a sentence in the simple present, e.g. I like languages, I’m going to learn Arabic next term.
