Noun Clauses Beginning with That: I Love Lucy
Use the Youtube video "I Love Lucy Ballet Lesson" (URL provided in worksheet) to teach adjective clauses beginning with "that" as objects of a sentence. Students will discuss what they, Lucy, and the ballet teacher think, believe, and know.
This lesson plan includes three activities as well as a PPP outline: a sentence scramble (cut up the sentences and have students put them in order in pairs), a battleship or get-four game (explained below), and a listening activity with reading script.
In the get-four game, the students have a grid with two axes. Listed along the top are independent-clause prompts, such as "I think," "Lucy knows," and so on. On the vertical axis, students will see unconjugated, undeveloped dependent-clause prompts, such as "(be) a good dancer." Students compete against each other to get four in a row by completing sentences with pairs of prompts and then placing their mark in the corresponding square. Whoever gets the most four-in-a-rows by the end of the activity time wins!
