China´s Tu (Monguor) Minority
The Tu are one of China´s fifty-six officially recognized ethnic groups. China´s total Tu or Monguor population is about 240,000. Most Tu live in Qinghai Province and in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Gansu Province. Most Tu are farmers and also have a few livestock. Today, many Monguor leave their homes to work in cities to do construction work and other labor. They do this to earn money. For much of the year, Monguor villages are home only to old people and children. During the New Year, however, most people return home.
