Colourful Alphabet Sounds
I created this exercise after I realized that while the children learned how to sing the alphabet relatively easily, they were not retaining the individual vowel sounds and resisted attempts to practice the alphabet after the initial lesson. I now use it as an initial lesson for very small children and a review lesson for older kids who need to brush up on their alphabet sounds.
Although it takes a bit of mental preparation to get this lesson prepared, it works out beautifully with kids of all ages and requires minimum supplies. They stay concentrated throughout the activity and are very proud when they have finished. Often they値l leave their finished paper in a prominent place, so they can refer to it later as needed.
Older children can decorate their letters with polka dots or stripes. Sometimes I値l combine this with an art lesson, teaching the children beforehand how to crayon in polka dots or stripes and then paint over the crayoned marks with watercolors. Crayon and watercolor don稚 mix, so the effect is very pretty.
