This worksheet is designed to work with a book that your student may be reading independently. Students practice looking at new and unknown words in context and guessing their meaning before looking up the words in the dictionary and creating their own original sentences. This exercise has helped my students to create more powerful sentences when they are using words from an authentic experience from a professional writer. This exercise also emphasizes that itīs important to persist in making meaning when reading.
Itīs possible there may be one student who claims that they arenīt finding any words they donīt know in their book, which is why I also said that they can choose "interesting" words as well. You could also assign them something more challenging to read too. I always learn interesting things about my studentsī vocabulary knowledge whenever I use this exercise.
