Idioms: flash-cards / posters
These flash-cards will help you introduce new idioms and their meaning. I normally teach an idiom per day as a starter activity.
Procedure: I first show the idiom to the students and ask them to brainstorm ideas about the meaning. Then I explain the meaning of the idiom with examples. Afterwards, I ask them to invent their own meaningful examples. They ellicit lots of examples that help the rest of the students to memorize the idiom. Finally, they write down the idiom, its meaning and their own example in a worksheet while I hang the flash-cards in our Idioms bulletin board.
These flash-cards can be used to teach students from elementary up to advanced level. Young learners enjoy learning idioms in context!
