Famous Women of the Western World
This was to teach 9th grade girls ESL. In their textbook was a section on Wilma Rudolph and I decided to write a mini-text about six different famous women in the Western world. I checked facts online and tried to write the paragraphs in a form of English my students could understand. Some words are a little advanced but we made use of dictionaries to help and it created a good learning time. My classes are split into six groups of six students, so each group picked a different woman to read about and then answer True/False Questions. Afterwards, each group created a booklet about the famous person. Advanced classes created their own sentences while lower level classes simply corrected the True/False sentences from the reading sheets. It was a good opportunity for my students to explore issues such as civil rights, science, athletics, etc. They were also very interested to learn more about some of the stories and asked many questions.
