Carl & Ellie´s Story (from Pixar´s Up) - writing a biography
The class watch the 5 min story of Carl and Ellie from the beginning of Pixar´s movie, Up (the link is on the worksheet). You can let them watch it once to enjoy and then the second time they write notes. Tell them to note down all the details of Carl & Ellie´s lives together. After the second time let groups compare to make sure their notes are quite comprehensive. Then ask pairs to write a biography of their lives on the worksheet. You can use this task to review past simple, past simple and continuous, linking words, organising information in to paragraphs and anything else you can think of really. More than anything it is a beautiful piece of animation and nice to show the class a whole story rather than just a clip from a movie. I´ve used this activity with pre-intermediate and intermediate students and they really loved it (although make sure you have tissues on hand).
