Culture diversity
it´s a part of a lesson about culture differences: o Put the cards (Handout 9), on the board, sts are unscramble the words. (Answer: China, Italy, Britain, Egypt, Thailand, Canada). Sts come to the board and write the answers under the card.
o Ask sts to think of 3 things, they associate with each country. Board the answers.
o Why do we have different words associated with each country? Elicit different cultures.
o Put the cards (Handout 10) on the board in a wrong order. Sts are to make a proverb.
o Feedback. (Answer: when in Rome, do as the Romans do.) What does it mean?
o Look at the pictures (Handout 11), what do they show? (Greetings in different countries); what does the 3d picture show (with a man and a woman). (Answer: misunderstanding, unawareness of cultural differences etc). Do you ofen face misunderstanding when you are abroad? Are you tolerant to other cultures and traditions?
o Divide sts into pairs, they are to complete the table (Handout 12) with their own ideas.
o Feedback
o Divide the students into 2 teams. Give each team 3 texts (Handout 13) about different countries, they read them, discuss, try to memorise. (about 5-7 min), then take their texts away, sts mix with the opposite team, making pairs, give them 5 minutes, so that they can tell each other about different cultures they read about. When 5 minutes are up, they go back to their teams, then they play “Run and answer” (Handout 14): they run to the board, tear the paper, go back to the team, read the question, answer it together and write the answer on the same paper, run to the teacher, show the answer, if the answer is correct, they can take the next question, but if it’s not correct, they go back to the team and think again. The team who is the first, is the winner. (Answers for Run and Write: 1) jealousy, 2) Italy, China, 3) Italy, Canada, Britain, 4) Britain, 5) yes, 6) cross your knife and your fork on your plate with the fork over the knife, 7) scissors, knives, clocks, handkerchiefs, straw sandals, 8) four, 9) purple, leaving rice uneaten).
