The New York Times "One in Eight Million"
This is a basic worksheet that is to be used with The New York Times photo essay series "One in Eight Million":

Students will fill out the table for each story.
This activity is pretty flexible, but I have some recommendations:
1. Instructors should preview the stories first, so that they can find which ones would be the most suitable for their class. Some stories are harder to understand than others (based on content and/or the narratorsĀ“ accents).
2. While previewing, be sure to choose vocabulary that may be difficult for your students, tell them about the new words before they listen.
3. For pre-listening, you can show they students the title of the story with the first picture. Have them guess what the story will be about.
4. Possible extension activities:
a. Tell each student to choose their favorite story. Then they will write a journal entry about a day in the life of the narrator.
b. Students can listen to 1-2 stories in class, then 1-2 at home or in a computer lab (with headphones). They can listen as many times as they need to to fill in the table.
c. Depending on the time and resources available, students can create their own photo essays (based on their own story or someone they know) and present them to the class. Today many students have access to digital cameras, voice recorders, and software (such as iMovie) that makes this relatively easy.
