Watching / listening from a scene in John Waters 1988 film Hairspray when the lead character and her mother shop for clothes. Itīs best done when viewing the entire film because then the vocabulary can be understood in more of a context, but it can also work as a stand alone exercise to improve listening skills. Iīve used the film Hairspray and these accompanying resources with groups of 11 - 14 year olds and theyīve enjoyed the activities. Hairspray is a comedy musical which also deals with serious issues of racism and the US civil rights movement. My students also did a brief comprehension exercise using footage from youtube - Hairspray is a good resource to use for this.
