Tense / lax vowel practice (short/long vowels) for Japanese and other ELLs
AIM: Jr. High and above; especially Japanese, who have trouble differentiating between tense and lax vowels in English. Humor is used to keep students engaged.
USE: These word pairs can be used in a variety of ways. You might start it as a full class exercise. Read the word at least two times, and then read the sentence. Ask students to guess if it’s a long (tense) or short (lax) vowel sound. Mix up the pairs, coming back to the second word after a short time to compare.
If you wish, you may break up students into pairs or groups of 3 or 4. One student reads the word and sentence, and others guess if it’s long or short, earning a point for a correct answer. Or, have them read both pairs and guess which is which. Watch students for correct pronunciation, and try to encourage them to exaggerate it for clarity. Students who answer should repeat the word before saying if it’s long or short.
Alternatively, have students work in pairs and separate into long/short piles.
