My 50 Words
A good exercise I have used is to give my students a lined sheet of A4 paper and ask then to make a list of 50 words that they know (dictionaries are not allowed).
For younger classes their words can be 4 letters only and maybe 30 words only. Older classes are expected to list 5, 6 or 7 lettered words, and longer words as long as they know the meaning of the word..
At the end of this exercise I will pick out some words (as time allows) and ask students to give the meaning of the words and to make a sentence containing the word.
I have found that students enjoy this exercise and are pleased to take part. Students like to show their skills and all students learn something from it.
