Identifying False Friends in Spanish - use the context to guess the meaning
I teach several classes where the main emphasis is on reading comprehension for Spanish speakers in Colombia. One of the techniques I like to teach my students is that of identifying cognates (similar words with similar meanings in English/Spanish) and false friends (similar words with different meanings). My students are generally too reliant on Google Translate (whose use I detest for language learning), and I try to ween them away from it. Reading techniques such as identifying word class, context-based guessing and cognates/false friends are strategies all learners should be employing BEFORE resorting to a dictionary or automatic translator such as Google Translate. The examples in this exercise are directed obviously towards Spanish speakers. Students should use the context of the sentence to see if the meaning of the English word is the same as a similarly spelled word in Spanish.
