How to Carve a Pumpkin with phrasal verb focus
This is a short reading highlighting different verbs, especially beginning phrasal verbs, for low intermediate learners. I literally carved a pumpkin in class and asked the students what I was doing during each step. Then they wrote down the story as I illustrated it before them using their own words with the help of some of the verbs listed on the board. After I finished, I handed out the paper and we reviewed it, comparing it to their own story.
Many of the students had never carved a pumpkin and I invited them to do the steps as I coached them. It was a fun, memorable lesson.
