All Purpose Board Game
This is really, as the title states, an all purpose board game that is adaptable to ANY grammar or vocabulary that you are working on. All you need in addition to this is a single die. Feel free to blow up the printout as well and put it on the board using magnets.
Hereīs how it works:
1) Break students into teams/groups and give them a game piece.
2) Students jyanken to determine playing order.
3) First group rolls the die. If they get a 1-2, they move one space; 3-4 gets them 2 spaces; 5-6 gets them 3 spaces. This is to make sure everyone gets a chance at different spaces.
4) As you can see, there are 4 different spaces on the board. "FREE" space. Student who rolled the die doesnīt have to do anything, but they donīt get points, either.
"SPELL" space. The student who rolled must spell target vocabulary, perhaps specific words or, as I did in my class, different verb forms. They can either say it aloud or write it on the board. If they are correct, they get 2 point (you can change point values, of course). Time limits help make this go faster (10-15 seconds to spell the word, for example; no help from the other team).
"SPEAK" space (the dark face). The student who lands on this space must speak English related to the specific lesson on which you are working. I had my students look at pictures of people doing different activities and say "He/She is ~ing" to practice ~ing verb forms. If they are correct, they earn 3 points for their team. Again, set a time limit for students to answer the question.
"JYANKEN" space. The student who rolled will battle with a member of the other team. The fun part is that the more students land on this spot, the more intense it becomes. It starts with a single 1-win battle. The team that wins takes ONE point from the other team. The next time, itīs best of 3, and the winner takes TWO points from the other team. Then, best of 5, and the winner takes THREE points. I capped it at best of 5, but I increased the points that teams can take by 1 each time.
Please feel free to post comments, and have fun!
