Writing Assignment for "Catcher in the Rye"
I sincerely believe this is the best teaching idea I have ever come up with. After studying J. D. Salinger’s "Catcher in the Rye," students have to imagine that they are Holden Caulfied, who is studying at their institution. This hand-out explains that they have to write a paper in the first-person telling about a typical day for Holden in their institution.
Students bring a printed copy of their paper to class, exchange papers with other students, and read 2-4 papers that other students have read before the teacher collects the papers.
Attached to the assignment sheet is an excellent example written by one of my students in an engineering school. Although his English isn’t perfect, he got Holden’s "voice." (You may or may not decide to give this to students.)
You may want to have a look at some of the other activities for "Catcher in Rye" that I have uploaded, several of which were suggested to me by EFL author Francoise Grellet.
(You may want to change the font so that everything fits onto one page, which can then be cut in half.)
