Introduction World War one
Introduce the war, explain dates 1914-1918, first world war, led to over 10million soldiers deaths and over 7 million civilians. Print off a large A3 printout of the Map of Europe and place on the board with magnets, give student the work sheet and ask them to fill out the countries that they already know, ask them to do this in pencil as this is a map of Europe in 1914 and the countries have changed now. Go through together:
1. UK
2. France
3. Belgium
4. Germany
5. Italy
6. Austria-Hungary
7. Russia
8. Serbia
9. Bulgaria
10. Ottoman Empire (High level) Turkey (low level)
Explain that Serbia, Italy, Uk, France, Russia and Belgium are on one team (The Allies) and Bulgaria, Austra-Hungary, Turkey and Germany on the other (Central Powers).
Ask them to colour Allied countries in red and central powers in blue. For lower levels, just refer to them as team red and team blue. Check out my sentence rewording for lower levels as your second lesson on WW1 where the reference team red and team blue is used.
