Following the example, the teacher reads a sentence using the verb in the tense that the teacher prefers. Students listen to the verb and decide what tense they hear, then circle the corresponding helping verb in the questions, as well as the appropriate adverb of time. An extension activity can be done at the end where the students pair up and ask each other the questions and their partners answer it.
