Hug the cactus - review game / filler / warmer - vocabulary and pronunciation - phonemes / phonemic script
This is a variation of a popular ESL game. Also known as "Stop the bus" , "Scattegories" , ....
I use it to review or as a warmer/filler.
Here´s the basic procedure: (message me if more detailed info needed, please :)
- The teacher sets 5 relevant categories (e.g. food, technology, linking word, ...)
- Ss, in small groups, write these categories in the first row on their worksheet.
- T boards and models/drills one phonemic symbol.
- Ss are then to find one word that includes the target sound for each of the 5 categories. (5 words in total)
- The first team to find and write down 5 words, shouts "Hug the cactus".
- All groups stop writing, T checks Ss answers in open class, gives points for each correct word.
- Can be repeated several times, as needed. (1 row on the worksheet for each sound)
