Reading Comprehension: Lunar New Year Across Asia
This resource comprises a set of 14 reading comprehension questions designed to allow students to practice reading sub-skills (Gist reading, scanning and especially detail comprehension)
The reading material consists of multiple paragraphs on Lunar New Year celebrations in different Asian countries, written by different authors. It was originally a reading material designed to be used as support for a class project or discussion, however I modified by adding my questions and removing their instructions.
The resource can be used in many different ways, as a project reading material or just as a light reading practice when the holiday period comes. As the reading material can be quite heavy for individual students, it is suggested to use this as a pair/group activity so the students can answer the questions faster by focusing in different paragraphs.
The topic is localized and appropriate specifically for Asian ESL students from the age of 12, but can be adapted to almost any classroom. The approximate English proficiency required should be low to high intermediate.
