I used this with my sheltered 12th grade English class. I gathered a random collection of text types from around my house and my classroom to have them sort each one into the 3 major text types. I included things like recipes, resumes, history textbooks, I Have a Dream speech, cover letters, etc. Once they sorted each text type, we used the graphic organizer to take notes of the differences. ANSWER KEY INCLUDED. I had them tell me what type of audience each example would best be directed at.
