Lesson plan and exercise for listening and reading
The aim of the lesson is to reinforce the reading and listening skills of the students. As advanced students they have had practice with regards to these skills numerous times, but the specific theme for this lesson adds an extra level of difficulty.
The students will be listening to actual conversations whilst having to answer comprehension questions about the conversations, thus they will be faced with real life scenarios where it will be expected of them to follow the conversation without the comfort of pausing and rewinding. Thus this lesson tests the students’ ability to listen with comprehension in real time, which is a skill that doesn’t come easily for second language learners and has to be practiced.
This is also the case for the first part of their reading lesson. It will be expected of them to skim/scan read a short paragraph and share with the class if and why they agree or disagree with the statements made in the paragraph. Thus the students should be able to not only read the words in a short amount of time, they should also be able to distinguish the important information from the not-so important information whilst doing this with comprehension. With regards to the second reading section the students will be given an academic type text, because they are university students and will at some point in their academic career inevitably be faced with an academic text written in English. Because this lesson serves as a way of easing into academic texts, the topic of the text is very light hearted and the students will be given ample time to work through the text with the aid of their resources if needed.
