Leisure time activities
Goal:
Students will know what leisure time activities are, and will express their prefereces about it.
Objectives:
Students will apply some reading strategies like, scanning, sensitizing, using background knowledge to comprehend a text
Students will write about the activities they practice in their leisure time.
Materials: Copies with a text about the topic and reading workshop.
Events:
1. Teacher will make a brainstorming along with the students about what they know about leisure time activities.
2. Secondly, students will be asked to look up some words of the reading to be taken to sensitize about some vocabulary students will find in the text.
3. Students are to read the article about leisure time by themselves in a first reading, and then they will do a second reading along with the teacher applying rereading as a strategy to be more involved with the text and to unveil obscure passages.
4. After the reading, students will do a scanning exercise for checking the comprehension of specific ideas. This exercise will consist on five statements to be checked F if the sentence is false and T if the sentence is true. Then they will share the answers will the group.
5. In order to connect the text to the students’ background knowledge, students will make a list of the leisure activities they know and will classify them into active leisure (AL) or passive leisure (PL). It will also help the teacher to check students’ comprehension about the two types of leisure time.
6. Teacher will do a microteaching about how to express likes or preferences. Taking advantage of the topic, teacher will express his in oral and written form like this:
In my leisure time I like watching tv series or going to the cinema, besides I love reading macabre stories and play the bass guitar.
When it comes to listening to music, I prefer heavy metal and classic rock.
7. Then, trying to relate the topic to their real lives, I will have them express their likes and dislikes in a written way as the last part of the workshop.
8. When the students have finished the workshop the teacher will collect the papers.
