Little Red Hen -- fill in missing letters
When my adult learners bring a child to ESL class, I am ready with a simple story. I ask the child (who always speaks better English than the parent) to turn pages and point to the characters as I read the story. I follow the story with an exercise, in this case requiring the learner to go back to the story to fill in the missing letters. This helps to increase reading speed and improve awareness of sentence structure. This also helps to acquaint the learner with stories that every American knows.
