D.I.S.C.O. - song worksheet for vocabulary building and word stress practice
I use this song with the topic of personality adjectives but it can also be beneficial for observing and practising the pronunciation, and more precisely the word stress in 3, 4 and 5-syllable words and word formation.
Pre-listening task: Give students the word cards (page 2 and 3). Suitable for pair or group work, in that case, you make as many copies of the pages as needed. Ask them to sort out the adjectives in two groups - positive and negative ones. Here you can also introduce or build on the previous explanation of word formation, especially negative prefixes. Higher levels can also discuss the differences in perception of some of the adjectives.
Listening task: Students put the word cards in the right order as spotted in the song. Here you can insert the word stress activity and ask them to observe and mark (why not with coins) the stressed syllables in each word. On the last listening, hand out the worksheets and have the students sing along to get used to the word stress.
Post-listening task: Students read (still in groups or pairs) the words while paying attention to the word stress. Then they create a new stanza upon the same model after brainstorming more positive and/or negative personality adjectives. The best way to do this is by creating the personality adjectives ABC. This could also be set as an individual homework task.
