"Self-Reliance" Pre-Reading Activity

I use this great pre-reading activity the day before my English 11 students and I read portions of Ralph Waldo Emersonīs famous essay "Self-Reliance." The instructions are one the first page, and the quotations are on the second page. Students are to choose four of Emersonīs quotations (from his essay), and practice summarizing them. Then we go through each quotation and discuss studentsī interpretations. It is a good way to get them interested in Emerson, because he writes about being an individual, which teenagers can easily identify with. Enjoy!
