Spider Spelling Activity Sheet for Teams or Pairs
Welcome to Spider Spelling! This is a silly little game that I just created. (I drew the spider myself.) Put students into 2 groups or have students sit together in pairs. Each child or team gets a chance to write as many words as they can on the spider web. The words they use must start with the letter in each section.
Set a time limit to add a sense of urgency and fun to the activity. Teams can take turns writing in each section. No words can be repeated.
You may award 1 point per word and bonus points for longer words.
You may also award points this way:
3 letter words = 1 point
4 letter words = 2 points
5 letter words = 3 points
6 letter words = 4 points
etc.
Game play can go like this…
Roll a die or pick numbers to see which student or team will go first. Let us say that team number 1 goes first. Team number 1 will write down a word starting with S. Then team number 2 will write a word beginning with S on the right side of the page. Then team number 1 writes a word starting with P on the left side of the page. Team number 2 does the same, but on their side of the page and so on….
After the time limit has been reached the points can be calculated.
I realize that the size of this worksheet is rather small for such an activity. You may continue the game on a blank piece of paper or somehow project the sheet onto a wall or screen. If you have access to an interactive white board, that would be even better. In this case you can make the sheet much larger and students will be able to play for a longer period of time.
I hope you will find this a useful activity. Use it during Halloween time or when doing a unit on insects and arachnids.
Enjoy!
P.S. ) More traditional spelling sheets can be found on page 3 . These sheets can be shared or distributed to each student in your class.
