Characterization of Canterbury Tales
Characterization
The techniques and author uses to develop characters are known as characterization. These techniques include description of the character’s appearance; examples of the character’s speech, thoughts, actions; responses of other characters to the character; and direct comments from the narrator.
Directions: Read the descriptions of the pilgrims from “The Prologue.” In the chart, record their titles/social status and what Chaucer tells you about each of the character’s dress, physical appearance - eyes, hair, clothing, and so on. Finally, explain what those details tell you about the character’s personality.
