Donīt learn English from George W. Bush!
This an activity for advanced students that I did with my different groups of high-level students and they simply loved it! Although itīs quite difficult, it is also very funny and so makes the students work a lot with sheer pleasure. In this exercise students not only revise their vocabulary, but also grammar, word formation and logical thinking.
My exercise is based on an article from Speak Up magazine.
The task is to correct the mistakes of a well known figure of the modern world, George W. Bush. All the examples of the erroneous sentences come from the calendar "The Very Curious Language of President George W. Bush."
Students are faced with true 22 Bushisms and have to correct all of them. To make it a little bit easier for them at the beginning of the task I mentioned the five basic areas of Bushīs mistakes: Area a: nonsensical statements; Area b: inappropriate diction; Area c: mangled words; Area d: pure bad grammar; Area e: scary ideas/theories.
The exercise has the answers for the teachers at the end where each sentence is profoundly analysed and all the mistakes are explained.
I hope you and your students will find this activity not only very challenging but also funny and original.
