Beginners´ Debate Activity Worksheet
Use this 2-page worksheet to guide students through a simple debate. In Part 1, Ss define "debate" and its purposes. (The teacher can let this be a free-write or make a listening practice out of it.) In Part 2, Ss define useful debate phrases in their native language. In Part 3, Ss take notes on the class debate by writing arguments for both sides. DEBATE ACTIVITY (for Part 3): The teacher divides the class in half and decides which half is FOR, which is AGAINST. If there are many students, each team can be further divided into smaller groups. Rule: Each group (or individual) must express at least one argument. For every argument expressed, you can let a group (or individual) take a color card. At the end of the debate, the winning team could be the one with the most cards. Especially good arguments can earn 2+ cards! Also included: Answer Sheet + Sample Debate Topic with for/against arguments. I´m using this debate lesson to follow up a viewing of "Super Size Me", so the topic I´ll use is "The Japanese government should make fast food illegal." You can change "Japanese" to the nationality of your students. Good luck! Any comments would be appreciated, as this will be my first debate lesson!
