Discourse Markers
Conversation markers (or discourse markers) are words and phrases used in speaking and writing as ´signposts´. They do this by showing turns, joining ideas together, showing attitude, and generally controlling communication.
Examples: Words like ´actually´, ´so´, ´OK´, ´right?´ and ´anyway´ all function as conversation markers as they help the speaker to manage the conversation and mark when it changes.
Conversation markers are helpful to all levels of students.
Lower Level: helps them build confidence that they can use English, by providing high pay off tools for very few words of English.
Intermediate Level: helps them understand different functions of language and various structure of conversation.
Higher Levels: Discourse markers are an important feature of both formal and informal native speaker language. The skillful use of discourse markers often indicates a higher level of fluency and an ability to produce and understand authentic language.
