I fought the law
"I fought the law" is a song by The Clash which I used it to introduce the past simple to my pupils because of the ludic aspect it brings into class.
The rythm of the song is very stressed and the song is very simple - a few lines are repeated over and over again, so if pupils miss the verb on the first time it shows up, they have more opportunities to try to spot it. I also included some listening/reading comprehension exercises (they start by listening to the song but from the moment on when exercise 1 is done, the reading of the text also becomes a reality) because I consider that pupils must face it as a llanguage development exercise, not just as fun.
Later on, the past simple needs further explanation and work(working on the negative and on the interrogative, for instance)but this seems to me a good starting point in a good mood.
