Kindergarten Heart Words
The heart word lists include the most common words in English. These 100 words make up over 50 of all the words students read! Many of these words cannot be sounded out because they do not follow decoding rules and, therefore, must be learned as sight words. The learning of the heart words in isolation, does not make a fluent reader; however, it can help to boost a childīs motivation and confidence. Students who memorize these words (or learn these words by heart) anchor their reading and have a good base for beginning reading. The 100 heart words are a combination of the well known Dolch and Frye lists, but, for copyright purposes, are not arranged in an order identical to either.
