CHINA“S TULOU “EARTH BUILDINGS“ IN FUJIAN: TIMED READING
This is a timed reading at the upper elementary level with one comprehension exercise featuring 10 multiple choice sentences. It is particularly appropriate when teaching in China.
The Fujian Tulou “earth building“ is a special type of home in the countryside. They were made by special groups of Han people called Hakka and Minnan. They live in mountain areas in southeastern Fujian Province. There are more than twenty thousand Tulou in Fujian. They were mostly built between the twelfth and twentieth centuries.The Tulou in Yongding Country are particularly famous.
A Tulou is a large, strong building. It may be a rectangle or it may be a circle. Its walls are made of earth mixed with stones, bamboo, and wood. Some walls are nearly two meters thick. The Tulou may be three to five stories tall. As many as eighty families may live in one Tulou. The round Tulou are the most famous. Storehouses, wells, and living areas may be inside the courtyards of the round buildings. Such buildings are like a small, strong city.
