Are you from....?
I created these (very simple) cards to encourage my students with short conversations. Each of them has a card and finds a partner in the class. Activity 1 : they ask each other basic questions such as "What´s your name?", "Where are you from?", "How old are you?".
Activity 2 using short answers (positive and negative). Student A can only use questions such as "Are you from England/English?", "Are you 10?" and Student B´s answers could be "Yes, I am" or "No, I´m not. I am from Wales" etc.
Then they find a new partner... My students loved these activities.
I also used these cards to assess their speaking skills in interaction.
