Survey: Do you get along with your parents or do you feel the generation gap?
A brief definition of the term "generation gap" followed by an anonymous survey. The survey is intended to find out how big the gap between the generation of your students and their parents really is (compared to the 60s when this term was coined).
The results may be visualized in a chart in order to reveal common points of friction in families. Next, they may be examined in more detail or used as a preliminary to a role-play activity.
The results in my class:
Most conflicts are due to school and chores followed by materialism and the use of media. Students also put forward that behaviour (clothing, food, language), alcohol and cigarettes are a common issue in their families. This is followed by arguments with or because of their siblings.
All in all most students felt that their parents are rather open-minded.
