Food Scattergories - A Fun Word Game!
This is a really fun team game! It is similar to the board game Scattergories. It is a great game to play to increase students vocabulary and get them to use words they may not normally use. I have used it with children and adults, with good results.
To play, it is best to divide the class into groups of 4 or 5. They can brainstorm ideas together. The teacher chooses a letter "randomly" (although I usually pick common letters to make it easier on the poor students!!). Give the students a few minutes to write as many words as they can as a group. Students write one word per category that begins with the letter. When time is up, go around the room and they can share their answers for each one. To score, I usually give the team 1 point for thinking of a word and 2 points for a unique word.
You can change the categories to make this game applicable to any topic you are doing. Itīs a really fun game and you will be surprised by how extensive studentsī vocabularies really are!!
