I have listed some of the most common ways to say ‘Nice to meet you’ below, and included the responses from the other person, so you know what to say, no matter whether you speak first or second! Formal: 1) Pleased to meet you 2) Pleased to meet you too Formal and Informal: 1) It’s very nice to meet you 2) Nice to meet you too Formal: 1) It’s a pleasure to meet you 2) Pleasure to meet you too Formal (This is regarded as somewhat archaic by many people nowadays, as the question isn’t answered with the reciprocal same question, but it used to be spoken as a statement, not a question (without the raised intonation at the end): 1) How do you do? 2) How do you do? This greeting is not used in American English, it was only ever used in British English, although nowadays it seems to be nearly extinct! Informal: 1) Lovely to meet you 2) Likewise Formal: 1) Pleased to meet you 2) Pleased to meet you too Formal and Informal: 1) Nice to meet you 2) Nice to meet you too Informal: 1) Glad to meet you 2) Glad to meet you too Formal and Informal: 1) How wonderful to meet you 2) Likewise At the end of a conversation with someone you have just met, you could say the following: Formal and Informal: 1) It was nice meeting you 2) Nice meeting you too Informal: 1) It was lovely meeting you 2) You too Informal: 1) It was nice to have met you 2) You too Formal: 1) It’s been a pleasure meeting you 2) The pleasure is mine Informal: 1) I’ve enjoyed meeting you 2) You too
