Valentines and Love Letters--Identify the verb tenses
These texts were adapted from famous personalities (Goethe, Hawthorne, Dickinson, Bronte, Napolean) Students read the texts, identifying modal verbs, present simple, present perfect, simple past verbs, present continuous verb in the text. Then they replace each “is” with a modal verb. Next they try to replace present tense verbs with subjunctive verb forms. Then, in one poem (or more) they change the verbs to past tense. They describe whether and how the verb changes affect the poems´ meaning or feeling (comparing and contrasting). The vintage valentine images are from http://thegraphicsfairy.com/40-free-valentines-day-images/ and are in the public domain. The poems are from http://www.theromantic.com/LoveLetters/main.htm and are in the public domain, as well.
