Giving Directions
This includes a worksheet with a map, cut-out "tasks" that students might have to accomplish, and a dialogue about getting lost and needing directions.
I began the lesson by reviewing places you can find in a city with my students (park, bank, school, shop, etc.) and then asking questions like: Where would I go if I wanted to buy milk? Where would I go if I wanted to exercise? We also reviewed directions, in that I had students stand up and told them to walk straight, turn right, turn left, walk toward the door, stand between this desk and that desk, etc.
I then gave them the map, told them that "home" was the starting point, and read off directions to various places in the city without telling them the end point. They had to follow along and tell me the destination. They then worked in pairs to play the same game with each other.
After that, we went through the dialogue, translated, practiced different vocabulary. I had cut out the tasks beforehand onto slips of paper. Put the students in pairs again, they drew a task (ex. "buy a new pair of boots," "watch a movie") and had to decide where in a city they would go to do this, then re-write the dialogue. Then presenting to the class!
