Appointment Clock
This is a clock graphic I created in Word to be used with the "make an appointment" cooperative grouping strategy. It is an excellent time-saver if you do a lot of student pairing. To use it, each student receives a blank clock. They write their names in the name space; then, they wander about the class making "appointments" with as many different students as they can. For example: Susie and John exchange their clocks and agree upon a time, let´s say, 1:00. Each writes his or her name on the other person´s clock in the 1:00 spot. Then, they exchange papers back and look for another person to make an appointment with. Now, Susie and John have an "appointment" at 1:00. Next, Susie might make a 2:00 appointment with Mary and a 3:00 appointment with Norm, and so on until the clock is filled. They should have a different name at each appointment time. Sometimes, they may need to double up or someone will end up with a blank. That´s okay. They can partner with someone else whose appointment is absent on the day of the activity. Once all clocks are filled, you have built-in, random pairings without having to assign partners each time you have paired activities. All you have to do is announce, "Today, you will be working with your 3:00 appointment (or 6:00 or 12:00 or whenever) on this activity." Students look at their clocks and immediately know who their partners are. I also keep track of all the times I´ve used, so that they don´t always end up working with the same partner. This strategy has been around for awhile, but I could not find an appropriate ready-made clock form, so I created this one.
