Here is a pair work exercise to practice the Present Perfect and Simple Past in a realistic way with questions about countries you HAVE visited and when you DID visit them. The students are guided in their questions, but have some freedom to choose the countries they want to talk about. (You need to review the names of countries before beginning.)
