"Whose child is this?" I asked one day
Seeing a little one out at play
"Mine", said the parent with a tender smile
"Mine to keep a little while
To bathe his hands and comb his hair
To tell him what he is to wear
To prepare him that he may always be good
And each day do the things he should"
"Whose child is this?" I asked again
As the door opened and someone came in
"Mine", said the teacher with the same tender smile
"Mine, to keep just for a little while
To teach him how to be gentle and kind
To train and direct his dear little mind
To help him live by every rule
And get the best he can from school"
"Whose child is this?" I ask once more
Just as the little one entered the door
"Ours" said the parent and the teacher as they smiled
And each took the hand of the little child
"Ours to love and train together
Ours this blessed task forever."
One Hundred Years from now (excerpt from "Within My Power" by Forest Witcraft)
One Hundred Years from now It will not matter what kind of car I drove, What kind of house I lived in, how much money was in my bank account nor what my clothes looked like. But the world may be a better place because I was important in the life of a child.
You both, Goodnesses and Mena, touched me. I read the previous post by Nebal, but I wasn t able to write anything worth. You did. Thank you. To you nebal, this is the wrong side of life we have ahead, it is our duty to do our best to change it. Sleep well, may all teachers in the world care about our children as you do. A big kiss
Goodness and Nebal, you have also touched my heart. I have just read nebal s post, and I m really sad. Unfortunately, this situation is familiar to me. I hope it never happens again. But I know that that s very difficult.
I ll open another post now with a poster because I think that what is said there, it s very important to everybody: parents and teachers
Dear Nebal and Goodness : The poems are great real!
I just have a look at Nebal s post and I m sad about this. Unfortunately I know about cases like this because my husband works with laws. It s incredible How many children are abused in different situations! It s terrible how much violence are in families now a days.
I don t know what your laws are in your country, but here in Argentina we can take the situation a social worker , or in my town we can inform to the judge and they have to investigate the family.
I think we have to inform in a formal way ( a letter) to your superior? at school, the headmaster.
We can t silence that things, We have to do something!
Today I felt how great teachers are, and how sacrificing they have always been. Thanks goodness for your poem . It s really touching. It pushed me to take action.
I couldn t sleep all night, thinking of all the advice I got yesterday. Tomorrow is Monday. It s my day. I will take action. I won t stand empty handed. I will take an appointment to visit his mom alone . I ll see!!!
I m still planning what to say and how to introduce the topic.
Dear Nebal. Pleased to know that the poem touched you. Hope every thing will come to a happy end for you and your kid(s).
However, the poem is not mine. I came across while searching the net. My pupils are preparing a project about the topic of violence at school. They are preparing two "School Charters" (I have 2 classes) which they are going to present to the whole school. Their school mates are going to vote for the best of the two. A way to make PP aware of this issue and teach them (indirectly) a bit of civic rights and duties. Hope it will work.
So I thought of you and that this poem would bring you some comfort.
