THERE IS or THERE ARE?

Can you help me, please?

Thank you!

I say the answer is "there is..." because "number" is singular.

I m not certain but I would say "there is" because large number is singular.

Sazzag has gotten me all confused now.

It seems that "a lot of" " a number of"... are like "many" and then the verb goes in plural.
At least, it is what I understood from the thread, but I may be wrong.

I m sorry, maybe I m old-fashioned.  Even after reading mjotab s link, I still say:

..a large number of people = subject

..."number"  = simple subject

If the simple subject is singular, then the verb should also be singular.

Note: I often hear people say " There were a large number of....", but, technically, it is wrong (unless there is an exception that I didn t learn as a native speaker nor as an Englsih major in college)
