Graphic Organizers to Help Students Summarize
Many people have trouble summarizing succinctly. Story hands and story maps can help solve this problem. Ive included blanks of these graphic organizers that students can fill in, and Ive also filled out one of each of the organizers for the story "The Three Little Pigs." These organizers can also be used as quick quizzes on stories that your stu...

How-To Speech Ideas, Requirements, and Models
It is appropriate to teach some public speaking skills to ESL students in addition to conversation practice. The easiest first speech is a how-to speech since it is usually relatively short and uses visual aids that help keep the speaker focused and give the audience something to stare at besides the speaker. In this file there are a list of many...

Five Types of Persuasion
You can tell students to vary the types of persuasion they use in essays, but they often get in ruts or simply dont quite understand. So I find it useful to take one topic and give them five paragraphs on it, with each paragraph representing a different type of persuasion. On this handout, Ive done that on the topic of imposing a teen curfew.

Square Puzzles for Noun/Verb Pairs and Idioms and Their Definitions
Print and cut apart one of each puzzle for every 2-3 students. Start the students with the noun/verb puzzle to get the students used to how this type of puzzle works. Suggest they work with the corner and edge pieces first like many of us tackle jigsaw puzzles. Circulate around the classroom a lot, especially with the first puzzle they do to make...

Group Discussion Rubric and Who Are the Best Citizens Discussion Topic
Different cultures have different expectations as to what is considered appropriate and valuable in a discussion participant. Hence, it is useful to clarify what these attributes are in English-speaking countries, like the United States, and to grade students accordingly. I like to display the rubric in this file, write the students names across...

Tact Headbands
Students roleplay a situation while wearing headbands that identify negative character traits. The other roleplayers must use tact while speaking about the character traits, and everyone tries to guess what their headbands said at the end of the activity.

Adjectives for People
An extensive alphabetical list of positive adjectives for describing people. There are at least five adjectives for every letter of the alphabet, although the adjectives for the letter x all begin with ex. I use this as a tool to help students with a getting-to-know-you exercise where they must think of an adjective that describes themse...

Ideas for Giving Game Instructions to Beginners
How do you get beginners to do or understand anything? You must mime and draw and emote. But most teachers, especially new teachers, talk a lot, and too often all that the students hear is a very frustrating, "Blah, blah, blah." Heres an example of how to get very low beginners to understand the vocabulary term "game" and actually play a game--Pic...

Subject/Verb Agreement Checkers
Grammar meets checkers. The students can only jump opponents checkers if there is subject/verb agreement between the pieces involved in the jump. For example, a checker with "he" on it can jump a checker with "writes" on it, but not a checker with "write" on it. Students will have to pay close attention to any ss they see.

Definition Chart Game
An important skill that ESL students need to acquire that is related to vocabulary is the ability to define words. In fact, they need to be much better at this than native speakers of a language since ESL students will more often find themselves in a situation where they dont know a word they need to use. If your students can explain their probl...

Field Trip ProposalProject Example
